SUMMARY
Past research has found schools are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit head teachers. Recent projections have suggested a substantial shortage of head teachers by 2022 driven by greater demand for executive head teacher roles, early exit from headship, and retirement of a predominantly older leadership pool.
The NfER wanted to look into the patterns of head teacher retention and turnover rates in England, the school and personal characteristics associated with head teacher retention, why some heads are leaving, and what factors might prevent effective head teachers from leaving.
