Union worried by head recruitment difficulties

1 min read Education
A headteachers' union has expressed its concern at the high number of secondary headship vacancies having to be re-advertised following the publication of an annual recruitment report.

The Education Data Surveys report into senior staff appointments in schools in England and Wales found that the proportion of secondary schools readvertising for head vacancies grew slightly last year from 25 per cent to 26 per cent, while the proportion of primaries doing so remained at more than a third. More than 400 secondary schools overall advertised for a head, and more than 2,000 primary schools. More than 50 academies advertised for a head last year, and a fifth were unsuccessful.

Dr John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: "It is a waste of time and money for schools to have to do this but, more importantly, it suggests that deputy heads are still not wanting to step up to headship in sufficient numbers."
