More teachers want to become heads

The number of aspiring head teachers has increased by ten per cent in the past year, according to a survey by the National College of School Leadership (NCSL).

Figures from the second annual Headship Index show more than 150,000 teachers would eventually like to become school leaders.

 

Teachers under the age of 29 were more ambitious than their older counterparts, with almost half aspiring to be head teachers.

 

Steve Munby, chief executive of NCSL, said that the figures are a “move in the right direction” despite the “huge” challenges associated with recruiting enough head teachers to replace a generation of school leaders due to retire shortly.
