The Care Commission, Scotland's care regulator, says the system, launched yesterday (4 December), will help members of the public to make choices about services.
Marks between one and six will be awarded in areas such as care and support, environment, staffing and leadership.
The scores will be accompanied by a report giving more information. Inspections will begin in April 2008, with the first reports published in July.
Jacquie Roberts, chief executive of the Care Commission, said she had deliberately avoided a star-ratings system. "If the grading system shows two similar services in the same area being awarded different grades it will encourage the poorer performing service to improve," she said.
