Self-assessment takes step closer: Local government

Self-assessment will be a major feature of the new comprehensive area assessment (CAA) framework for local authorities that is due to be introduced next April.

The framework, which aims to reduce the burden of inspections on councils, will replace star ratings for councils, joint area reviews and annual performance assessments.

Speaking at a Local Government Association conference last week Gareth Davies, managing director of the Audit Commission, the body that will supervise CAAs, said proposals to use self-assessment in the framework have been met with widespread approval.

Although the consultation on CAAs is open until the end of October, Davies said positive feedback suggests self-assessment will be an important part of the final framework.

He also said CAAs will do more to consider the views of service users, including children, young people and the voluntary sector.
