GOVERNMENT: Children directorate appoints first head

From 10 November, Tom Jeffery will replace interim director Peter Makeham as head of the directorate, which includes the Children and Young People's Unit and Connexions Service National Unit.

He will advise children and young people's minister Margaret Hodge and education secretary Charles Clarke on child policy and the green paper Every Child Matters.

Jeffery, who has a social care and education background, said: "I look forward to working with ministers, and colleagues in children's services and the voluntary sector, to make a reality of the vision set out in the green paper."
