Our panel offers advice on the dangers of salt, selling yourself at

- Can too much salt be harmful for children?

Yes. Too much salt is bad for everyone.

We need some salt to maintain fluid balance and for nerve and muscle function. However, we generally eat more than the recommended amount because salt is added to so many foods such as bread, breakfast cereals and baked beans.

Giving children too much salt predisposes them to high blood pressure, strokes, heart failure, stomach cancer and osteoporosis. Cook from scratch and use herbs to flavour food. Eat more foods like shredded wheat, couscous, eggs, emmental cheese, cottage cheese, yoghurt, fresh meat, chicken and fish, all kinds of fruit and vegetables, homemade soup, and pulses.
