Girls create DVD to warn of debt risks

1 min read Youth Work
Young women have made a DVD warning against the dangers of getting into debt.

Girls from youth charity YWCA's project in west Kent have written and produced a DVD called Moneywise. In the film, the young women warn their peers of the risks of debt and encourage them to talk about their personal experiences of financial struggle.

The DVD, produced with support workers, features the girls interviewing each other about getting into debt and how to manage money.

It follows YWCA England's No Frills: Young Women and Poverty report, published last year, which showed young women in England were almost twice as likely to be living in poverty than young men.

Georgia Lucas, a 21-year-old mother who took part in the project, said: "A lot of people feel ashamed if they are in debt because they think it's their own fault. If they watch this DVD they can see they're not alone, it's not their fault and debt can be sorted out. It felt good knowing we might help somebody avoid future debt problems."
