
According to Wikipedia, the trend started as a form of hardcore punk called emotional or emotive hardcore during the mid-80s in Washington DC. However, during the mid-90s the shortened term "emo" started to be used to refer to certain rock indie bands.
In recent times it has also become associated with a style of fashion where young people wear tight jeans, studded belts, canvas trainers and grow long fringes swept to one side.
More traditional emo fans will listen to bands like My Chemical Romance, Funeral For A friend and Panic At The Disco and dress mainly in black and dye their hair.
