Funding Watch: Victim Support given cash boost

1 min read
Services to help children and young people affected by crime will be expanded thanks to a 365,000 lottery grant to Victim Support.

The cash from the Big Lottery Fund will be used over three years to fund community-based projects run by the charity, which has campaigned to raise awareness of the needs of young crime victims.

Peter Dunn, Victim Support's head of research and development, said: "This money will give a tremendous boost for our services and the people who use them, many of whom are vulnerable and in real need of support.

"For too long the focus on young people and crime has been on young people as offenders. But research shows they're as likely as adults to become victims of crime.

"We want children and young people to get effective support and practical help."

The money will go to up to three projects, which will submit bids in coming weeks.

Local branches of Victim Support run a wide range of services to help young victims including outreach work in local schools, colleges and youth groups.

A spokesman said: "Around the country local branches offer specialist services including working with young people affected by domestic violence and anti-bullying work such as peer mentoring.

"The money could go towards awareness raising and increasing the number of presentations to schools and colleges."
