Funding Watch: Learning Outdoors Fund

The Learning Outdoors Fund is designed to help nurseries, primary schools and secondary schools in central Scotland to promote learning, outdoor play and healthier lifestyles.

The fund, which is run by the Central Scotland Green Network, aims to encourage “natural play” – child-led outdoor play that takes place either in natural spaces or in playgrounds where natural elements have been introduced to enrich play activities.

How much is on offer? Projects can apply for up to £350 funding. Only one application is allowed from each establishment and the funding must be used before March 2013.

What will it fund? Grants can be used to develop school grounds for learning and natural play, or to develop surrounding areas such as woods or green space. The money can also be used to provide equipment for learning and natural play or to support training or other educational resources to enable staff to lead outdoor play.

An online audit tool is available to assist nurseries and schools in identifying where there may be gaps in provision for learning outdoors, and to provide tips on where to target grant money. Funding is awarded based on a mixture of criteria including an assessment of need, and the potential to increase use of school grounds local woods and green space.

When is the deadline? 11 January 2013. Successful applicants are contacted within four weeks of submitting their application.
