What is it? First Light Movies provides grants to projects that allow young people to participate in all aspects of film production. Since its launch in 2001, the funds have enabled more than 20,000 young people to write, act in, shoot, light, direct and produce more than 900 films across the UK.
How much is on offer? Three separate funds total £700,000. The script grant provides up to £3,000 to scriptwriting projects that team up young people with professionals. The pilot grant offers funds of up to £5,000 for young people to shoot one short film and the studio grant provides up to £30,000 for projects producing multiple films.
What will it fund? Recent funding recipients include a project in Cambridge aimed at re-introducing cinema to young people and the local community and Film 15 Productions Ltd, which specialises in the development and delivery of film-making activities for young people in mid Wales.
Who can apply? Grants are on offer to schools, youth services and voluntary and community groups working with young people aged five to 18. To apply for the studio grant, projects must have a track record of filmmaking with young people.
