The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) has written to the Government and EU institutions highlighting the importance of funding streams such as the European Social Fund (ESF), which has injected at least 69m into youth work over the past few years. The current ESF programme comes to an end next year and the future of the scheme is uncertain. Nolan Quigley, the NCVO's European and International Officer, said: "The sector is concerned that EU enlargement will cause ESF money to go to the poorer countries."
As well as supporting voluntary organisations, the ESF has also played an important role for local learning and skills councils in plugging the funding gaps preventing young people accessing Entry to Employment (e2e) programmes.
