REGENERATION: The money's running out

The future of UK and European regeneration budgets is in doubt. Patrick McCurry finds out how the youth projects that depend on them are coping.

In Leicester, for example, the SRB partnership is based around the deprived Beaumont Leys Estate and has been spending 2.4m a year, of which 20 per cent goes on youth schemes including a detached youth worker, refurbishment of play areas and mediation projects in local schools. Paul Quinn, manager of the Leicester North West SRB Partnership, says: "Statutory and voluntary sector-run youth activities have been finding it increasingly hard to get funding, so regeneration money like the SRB has been a lifeline in terms of developing new initiatives."

But now the future of these programmes is in doubt, at least in their current form, and many expect fewer young people-related projects to be funded in the coming years.
