Funding: Scotland - Commissioner set to defend budget

Scotland's children's commissioner was due to defend her budget proposals before a Scottish Parliament committee yesterday (22 November) after MSPs raised concerns about her "ambitious" spending plans.

Kathleen Marshall's 2006/07 budget prompted concern from theparliament's finance committee, after she revealed plans to spend 157,000 on publicity, 100,000 on research and 118,000 onparticipation.

Marshall is expected to tell the committee that her role "differssubstantially" from Scotland's other commissioners, whose spending issignificantly less.

"We are expected to be proactive and engage imaginatively with childrenand young people," she wrote in evidence due to be heard yesterday. Sheadded the sums were not extravagant compared with budgets for the UK'sother children's commissioners.
