Professor Kathleen Marshall, whose nomination for the post was ratified by the Scottish Parliament last week, said her focus in the first year of her initial five-year term would be developing initiatives that "capture young people's imaginations".
One idea is to introduce an award for children's rights, to be voted for by young people. "The first year will be reactive but it will lay the groundwork for a proactive approach," she said.
Her remit covers two main areas: raising children's issues with Parliament and commissioning research; and establishing formal investigations into how service providers in the public, private and voluntary sectors respect children's rights.
