The Government says it has increased the potential resources available to local authority youth services. But are youth service managers seeing any extra cash? PJ White unravels the mystery.

Bradford Youth Service has reported a budget increase totalling 29 per cent, following a fall in the previous year. Not so, says Chris Whiley, head of service. "We didn't actually get an increase in the first year and this year we've had a slight cut," she explains.

Walsall's youth service budget has seen a whopping increase of nearly 500 per cent. There has been an increase, but not by that much. The chances are that something was missed from the previous year's figures.
