Funding: Grants scheme has to reject applicants

Successful organisations included YouthBank UK, the youth-led small grants programme, which was allocated nearly 215,000 over the next three years. It will develop more youth banks with the money.

Less successful was the Federation for Detached Youth Workers, whose 100,000 bid was turned down. The money would have enabled the organisation to employ a full-time co-ordinator.

Lottery funding enables the federation to employ a part-time administrator and a consultant, but this runs out in April. Peter Harris, chairman of the federation, said: "We had a strong argument but they felt our outcomes weren't clear enough."

A DfES spokeswoman said the annual amount made available to organisations had increased by 1m from the 2002-05 programme.
