Launching his bid to be leader of the Labour Party on 11 May, the Chancellor stated the importance of "youth budgets with young people making choices".
Tom Wylie, chief executive of The National Youth Agency, said he believed Brown was referring to extending the Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF) and Youth Capital Fund (YCF), currently funded until April 2008.
The move comes as Young People Now this week learned that only 10 per cent of the Treasury-backed Youth Challenge Competition funding, which recognised the best YOF and YCF projects, went to the winners.
According to figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, only 206,000 of the 2m allocated to the competition in the 2006 Budget went to the 15 winning youth groups.
