Youth fund panels successful at empowering young people

A government drive to give young people more decision-making power has been hailed a success in an official evaluation.

The National Foundation for Educational Research carried out research into the youth opportunity fund (YOF) and youth capital fund (YCF). It looked at the £115m projects, which were established in April 2006 to improve provision of positive activities for young people by giving them say over how funding is spent in their area.

The report found all 129 local authority staff questioned believed young panel members had benefited socially and 98 per cent said the young people involved in the decision-making panel had done a good job.

However, the main challenge councils had in implementing the funds was keeping the correct balance between funds being young people-led and ensuring necessary council procedures were adhered to.
