Football initiative gets recognition

Youth Work
A football project aimed at engaging young people in disadvantaged areas has received an award for its work.

Kickz, which is a joint initiative between the Football Foundation, the Metropolitan Police and the Premier League, scooped the Community Programme Award at the Sport Industry Awards 2009.

The project gives young people mainly aged 12 to 18 the chance to play football and other sports, as well as an opportunity to volunteer in the community. It also aims to break down the barriers between police and young people, reducing crime and antisocial behaviour and encouraging them to think about social issues.

Minister for sport Gerry Sutcliffe said: "Kickz has got the recognition it deserves for the fantastic work it does."
