Flooding: Children's centres aid flood victims

Children's centres have played a key role in supporting families hit by ongoing flood chaos in central and southern England.

Centres in Gloucestershire are helping to get information and advice toparents, and are working with other agencies to co-ordinate support forvulnerable families.

Centres hit by flooding, such as Priors Park Children's Centre inTewkesbury, were quick to re-open and offer play sessions.

"The staff have been absolutely incredible," said Jackie Hall,Gloucestershire's cabinet member for children's services. "They haveworked round the clock to get things operational and get helpingfamilies."

She said initial reports suggested eight schools had been damaged acrossthe county.

Children's secretary Ed Balls has pledged 4m in initial supportfor flood victims, on top of 10m for schools and children'sservices in the north hit by floods in June.
