Analysis - Childrens centres: Unease over children's centrefunding

1 min read
While most directors said they expect to successfully meet their 2008 target for the number of children's centres within existing funding, the survey did find evidence of unease about the financing of children's centres.

Firstly, 19 per cent of directors said current funding wasn't enough forthem to meet the 2008 target. And, when asked what area of children'sservices they wanted money for from the Government's spending review, 29per cent said they wanted cash for children's centres.

Even some of those directors who thought they would meet the 2008 targetexpressed concerns about money. "This will be a challenge, but we areworking flat out," said one. "Funding must be increased."

Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day NurseriesAssociation, said the finding is worrying. "The association is concernedthat almost one third of respondents believe putting further funds intochildren's centres is a top priority. Recent research reveals that theaverage cost of providing a place in a children's centre is 250per week - far more than the average fees paid by parents of 130."
