Analysis - Childrens centres: Workforce - Lead members

Following the passing of the Children Act 2004, every local authority in England has had to appoint a councillor who is legally responsible for the work of their council's children's services department.

But how good are they in this role? In order to find out, Children Nowasked directors of children's services to rate their lead members. Thesurvey revealed that, for the most part, directors have a goodrelationship with their lead councillor.

Of the directors questioned, 65 per cent felt their lead councillor forchildren's services was doing a great or good job. One children'sservices director said their lead member was "doing a fabulous job".

A further 29 per cent of directors said their lead member was doing anokay job.

In fact, just one children's services director rated their lead memberas poor saying: "In terms of fulfilling strategic responsibilities themember is pretty poor. The member should be taking a strategic leadshaping the policy of the council but it's happening from the officers'side rather than the member's."
