1 min read
The progress towards a Sure Start children's centre in every community by 2010 could be delayed in some areas as a result of the devastating floods that swept England last week.

Areas severely affected by flooding included Sheffield, Hull,Lincolnshire, Doncaster and Northallerton.

Although some, such as Lincolnshire, escaped without any lasting damageto children's centres others, such as Hull, were not so lucky.

A spokeswoman for Hull City Council said a number of Sure Start andchildren's centres had been temporarily closed as a result of theflooding and it was likely the ongoing programme of deliveringchildren's centres would be affected. "At the moment we're desperatelytrying to deal with the immediate issues and we accept this will delaythings with the new programmes but right now it's difficult to predicthow much," she said.

It is thought the cost of recovery from the floods, which hit the Northand Midlands, will run into millions.
