First special school gains trust status

1 min read Education Health Social Care
A school in Poole has become the first special school in England to gain trust status. The move aims to encourage integrated working between education and health workers and other children's professionals in the Dorset town.

Montacute School, which caters for 75 pupils with multiple learning difficulties, teamed up with a number of partners including Dorset Scope, Bournemouth and Poole Primary Care Trust, Bournemouth and Poole College, Bournemouth University and the local council to form the trust. Its board of governors voted unanimously to become a trust school and started operating as one this month.

Chair of governors Pam Henderson said the change would help the school provide services in a more joined-up way. "This is about ensuring our vision of a joined-up service has a future," she said. "A lack of inter-professional working has been a barrier for a long time and parents are often taking children out of school to access clinics and other health services. We hope by working together we will be able to have innovative facilities and more joined-up working."
