Children’s Secretary Ed Balls reaffirmed his commitment to see every secondary school become a specialist school, a trust school or an academy, each partnered with a university or business partner, despite opposition from teachers' unions and others.
“A trust is one model schools can adopt to harness local expertise and give school leaders the tools they need to continue our drive to increase standards and tackle poor performance,” he said.
One of the schools that has now joined the programme is Montgomery High School in Blackpool.
It aims to establish a trust with local further and higher education institutions as well as businesses, and will develop a ‘learning laboratory’ examining different approaches to learning.
