Fingerprint technology: Gloucestershire to investigate schools

A local authority has launched an investigation after discovering at least one in five of its primary schools has been fingerprinting children as young as four.

Fingerprinting technology is increasingly being used in schools acrossthe UK and it is usually bought-in independently of the localauthority.

Now Conservative councillor Jackie Hall, lead member for children'sservices at Gloucestershire County Council, has ordered an investigationafter it transpired that the technology was being used in primary schoollibraries.

"As far as I can tell, there has been no widespread objection fromparents," said Hall at a meeting of the council. "However, it would behelpful to know how many schools are using this technology and what itis used for so a policy can be drawn up for the next academic year, so Ihave asked for an investigation.
