FAITH-BASED YOUTH WORK: Christian project set to target offenders

The young offenders project has been running in northeast England for nine years in six institutions.

The Christian youth charity is applying to trusts and churches for 300,000 to expand the scheme.

Youth for Christ's project focuses on three areas: arts-based projects, which include DJing workshops and setting up a radio station; running a youth club within the prison; and evangelistic work, which includes presentations and holding Sunday services in prison chapels.

Geoff Baxter, young offenders services manager at the project, said: "If you look at the reoffending rate of young offenders from release over three years, it is around 80 per cent. However, the rate for offenders who come through our project is around seven per cent."
