Extended schools to be cash priority

Education
Education charity ContinYou has welcomed an increased focus on extended schools in government plans to speed up the 45bn pound Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

A consultation document, published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families last week, suggests new criteria for which schools should be prioritised for BSF cash. These include schools that can be located on the same site as other facilities and those in areas of social regeneration.

Schools minister Jim Knight said the scheme aimed to target children with the greatest needs and reflect reforms such as the extended schools programme.

ContinYou's chief executive Laurence Blackhall said he had been concerned up until now that there was not enough consideration of extended services and community access in many BSF schemes.

"We are very pleased the government has responded to these concerns," he said. "Extended services are an essential part of improving achievement and we are delighted their provision is at the heart of new proposals."
