Extended schools assist parenting

Education
Extended schools should play a central role in the development of parenting support services, a government-funded study has recommended.

Researchers from the University of Warwick looked at the involvement of extended schools in the Parenting Early Intervention Pathfinder. Launched in 2006, the project funded 15 local authorities to implement a programme focused on parents of children between eight and 13 years old.

The report found the programmes offered many benefits, including improved pupil behaviour and better relationships with parents. However, a lack of suitable facilities in some schools posed potential barriers to their continued involvement.
