Extra cash for NI extended schools

Disadvantaged pupils are to get increased access to out-of-school activities in the second year of Northern Ireland's extended schools programme.

Education minister Catriona Ruane has pledged funding to boost extended services in the new school year and is due to unveil an additional round of funding in October, CYP Now can reveal.

The money will go towards creating a range of before- and after-school activities and developing strong links between schools and community organisations.

A spokesman from the Department of Education said: "The department fully recognises the importance of the extended schools programme and has allocated additional funding for eligible schools with high proportions of socially disadvantaged children."

Seamus Searson, Northern Ireland orgnaniser for teachers' union NASUWT, said: "It is a valuable scheme that needs to be embedded into the education programme and not just seen as an add-on.
