Tina Wood, head of Shropshire Children's Trust, said the money was found after the trust identified a gap in the provision of school nurses. "The primary care trust recognised that school nursing was very stretched in Shropshire," she said.
The PCT has now agreed to spend £135,000 a year to provide more school nurses, with the first set to be in post in December. The money will provide the equivalent to seven extra school nurses, through increasing existing staff hours, putting in qualified staff to work alongside school nurses and creating new posts.
Speaking at 4Children's Extended Services in Schools: On Target conference last week, Janet Graham, assistant director multi-agency and prevention at Shropshire County Council, said: "We knew we didn't have enough school nurses but knew they were vital for the extended schools agenda."
