Europe: Exchange project budgets could rise

Ministers recommended increasing spending on the Lifelong Learning programme to EUR13.6bn from 2007 to 2012 at a meeting of the European Union's Education and Youth Council in Brussels last week.

Ministers also want to increase the budget for the Youth in Action programme, which funds exchange trips and overseas volunteering opportunities for young Europeans, to EUR915m. The council should decide whether to agree the amounts before the end of the year.

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly, who chaired the meeting, said the Youth in Action proposals would create "more accessible opportunities for all young people to participate in exchanges and voluntary work within Europe and beyond".
