Funding: Europe bolsters investment in youth work

1 min read

Youth in Action, which lasts until the end of 2013, has a budget of EUR885m (585.3m), of which EUR7m (4.6m) will be available for the UK this year.

Its predecessor funding stream, the European Youth Programme, had a EUR640m (422.7m) budget. The British Youth Council campaigned to protect the programme after the European Commission drafted a 34 per cent cut last year (YPN, 1-7 February 2006, p2).

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, the council's trustee, said: "We are pleased that, following our campaign in February 2006, the budget has been increased."

Youth in Action will have a stronger focus on citizenship than the European Youth Programme, in response to concerns over apathy shown by young people towards the European Union.
