Human rights laws can be confusing for children and young people but it is important for them to know how they are protected

Do equality laws protect children and young people? Yes and no. The Equality Bill that is currently going through Parliament will not protect under-18s from age discrimination in respect of goods, facilities and services - a curious government position regarded as discriminatory by both the Young Equals campaign and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). Quite a few children and young people are none too pleased about it either. But equality laws protect people of any age from discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, disability, sexuality and religion or belief. These also protect young people from being discriminated against because of their age in relation to things such as employment.
