Employment: Government plans work-based pilots

The 10m Department for Education and Skills-funded initiative, outlined in last year's 14 to 19 education white paper, will be based on the oversubscribed Entry to Employment programme for 16- to 19-year-olds (YPN, 2-8 March 2005, p2).

The pilots will involve 21 children's services or local learning and skills councils co-ordinating work-based programmes designed to motivate those most at risk of dropping out. The pilot areas are: Birmingham, Bristol, Cumbria, Devon, Durham, Essex and Thurrock, Greater Manchester, Hackney, Knowsley, Lancashire, Leeds, Leicester City, Medway, Newham, Norfolk, Southwark, South Gloucestershire, Swindon, Warwickshire and Coventry, Wirral and Wolverhampton.
