YOUTH EMPLOYMENT: Government gives work opportunities to young

Changes in the New Deal for young people were announced. These include giving young people more flexibility over the options they choose when they are attending the New Deal and giving extra support to ethnic minority jobseekers. The Government also intends to extend the help provided to lone parents.

The chancellor announced that a pilot work and training project for young offenders would be extended, under the chairmanship of Sir John Parker of utility firm Transco.

Pioneered at Reading prison, it is believed to have been tried in other areas, offering offenders training and work in prison and a possible job on release.
