Emmanuel Junior School, Sheffield

What did they do? Children at Emmanuel Junior School took part in a project called Bike It, in partnership with sustainable transport charity, Sustrans. The scheme aims to increase the number of children and young people who cycle to school.

What did it involve? Pupils took part in cycle skills sessions and decorated their bikes to celebrate the installation of a new bike shed at the school. They also made fruit smoothies using a specially adapted bike, which pulverised the fruit when a pupil pedalled.

What did the pupils think? Simon Benedict-Flavell, aged nine, learnt to cycle as part of the Bike It project. He says: "I really enjoy cycling to school because it's a lot of fun and much quicker than walking. It was very difficult trying to pedal at first and I kept falling off, but I managed to be brave enough to do it and felt happy."
