Education: Youth charities in schools can strengthen learning

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly said: "We need to harness all the energy and skill we can in the provision of state education so that we can raise standards for every pupil."

She added: "I am interested in how we can work with not-for-profit organisations such as educational charities and faith groups to drive the next phase of reform."

Kelly said the change would be driven by local government, with councils commissioning services to work in schools.

But the Local Government Association (LGA), in a joint report prepared with the National Foundation for Educational Research, has questioned the ability of schools to combine independence with partnership working.
