EDUCATION: Charities to merge learning services

The Community Education Development Centre, which provides community activities such as reading clubs and crafts, has been talking to Education Extra, which specialises in out-of-school hours learning, for the past 12 months about how their work could be combined. They will now launch a new organisation, to be named by the autumn.

Phil Street, chief executive designate, said that using learning to improve social inclusion would be key. He is currently chief executive of the Community Education Development Centre.

John Crossman, acting director of Education Extra, said: "We are convinced that this merger has massive potential to provide a coherent and effective service for young people."
