The total number of 16- to 18-year-olds in education and training at the end of 2006 was 1.55 million, the highest number ever, government statistics show.
The proportion of 16- to 18-year-olds in education and training stood at 77.3 per cent at the end of 2006, an increase of 0.5 per cent from the previous year. But this is less than the 77.9 per cent in education and training in 1994.
The proportion of 16- to 18-year-olds not in education, employment or training fell to 10.3 per cent from 10.9 per cent at the end of 2005. Steve Stewart, chief executive of Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire, welcomed the figures, but said further improvements are needed.
