Connexions: Economic slowdown means more disengaged

The survey, conducted by Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire, shows that a shortage of learning provision in sectors such as construction is stopping about 40,000 16- to 18-year-olds entering the job market.

The findings also suggest that job cuts have led to a rise in youth unemployment, in particular among previously employed 17- and 18-year-olds in disadvantaged areas.

This includes parts of Coventry and Warwickshire, one of the best-performing Connexions partnerships, where the increase in unemployment among this age group has risen by one per cent since last year's count.

Steve Stewart, chief executive of Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire, said: "The view is that the figure is rising, although we won't know for certain until we see the final results of the November NEET count. The anecdotal evidence is that there has been some increase because the economy is cooling down."
