Education News: Wales - Uniform funding is announced

Children from low-income families in Wales are to get 85 towards the cost of buying a school uniform.

The money will be made available to all pupils who receive free school meals and are starting their first year of secondary school.

Announcing the funding, Jane Davidson, minister for education and lifelong learning, said: "School uniform has a number of benefits for pupils in school. It helps provide a sense of identity, promotes discipline, helps reduce inequalities between pupils and ensures pupils are dressed appropriately for learning."

The grant for school uniform is not policy in England but has been introduced in Wales after Welsh Assembly members voted in favour two years ago.
