Education News: Trust schools - Alarm over private talks withCadbury

Children's health campaigners have expressed alarm following the revelation that Cadbury Schweppes held private talks with the Government about running a new-style trust school.

The confectionery and drinks giant was among a group of companies thatheld private talks with education secretary Ruth Kelly last week. Othersincluded the French utilities company EDF and the electronicsmanufacturer Toshiba.

Richard Watts, campaign co-ordinator for the Children's Food Bill atSustain, said: "The School Food Trust has made some strongrecommendations on protecting children's health by banning sales ofchocolate and confectionery in schools. We would hope that these ruleswould apply to Cadbury Schweppes if it were to run a trust school and wewould be extremely concerned if they did not."

A spokeswoman for Cadbury Schweppes said the company had been invitedfor discussions by the Department for Education and Skills, but insistedthat it had no intention of founding a trust school.
