Education News: Literacy - Concern over use of synthetic phonics

Teachers have expressed concern over Government plans to overhaul the way children are taught to read in primary schools in England.

Education secretary Ruth Kelly has accepted a review that backs thegreater use of synthetic phonics, a system in which children learn thesound of letters before they are exposed to books.

But the National Union of Teachers warned that synthetic phonics may notsuit all children's learning styles. General secretary Steve Sinnottsaid: "There must be a range of strategies to hand. Without that, ateacher will be constrained in teaching a child who is struggling tocope with phonics."
