Last week, the Government launched the Letters and Sounds pack forprimary schools. Previously teachers in England could use a variety ofmethods, but they are now legally obliged to use phonics.
"Phonics should be just one of a range of techniques used to teachreading. Teachers should be allowed to use their professional judgementas to which are best," said Martin Johnson, deputy secretary of theAssociation of Teachers and Lecturers.
Letters and Sounds is divided into six sections and starts by teachingchildren the 44 letter sounds and then how to blend them together tomake words. Ministers claim when children reach stage six, they shouldbe able to read fluently.
