Education News: Teaching - Summer school for London teenagers

Young people across London will be given the opportunity to attend summer universities after the Government pledged 2m of funding.

The money will be shared out among a network of 11 localauthorities.

They will provide a wide range of courses - from new media to fitness -for children aged between 11 and 16. The project will be called SummerUni London.

Junior schools minister Lord Andrew Adonis said: "This project fulfilsour aim of giving every London teenager the opportunity to take part insummer learning. Research shows that pupils who attend a summerprogramme reap benefits at school. By making learning fun we can raiseattainment and help young people reach their true potential."

The new summer universities will be based on the successful TowerHamlets Summer University, now in its tenth year.
