The ombudsman's verdict follows a complaint by a Stockport parent whosechild had been turned down for a place at Manchester's MicklemassCommunity School, which is just a mile from his home. The ombudsmanfound that priority on admission was being given to pupils attendingManchester primary schools who lived further away.
In giving a ruling of "maladministration causing injustice", ombudsmanJerry White said the council had failed to comply with the Government'scode of conduct, which orders councils to give priority to those livingnearer a school.
The council, which has now indicated it will review its admissionspolicy, was also ordered to pay the parent 250.
