The NASUWT currently advises its members against taking school trips but is under pressure from the Government to reverse its stance.
This week a spokesman suggested the union was backing down. He said: "The issue seems to be moving in the right direction but at present it's not enough for the union to change its mind."
School trips were back in the headlines following a report by the Health and Safety Executive into the death of pupil Max Palmer in 2002. The report found the main cause of the tragedy was "serious errors of judgment" by the teacher in charge. The NASUWT welcomed the report and said many of the issues raised were now being addressed.
